This season the strapless neckline has stopped running straight across. The line curves instead: it dips softly at the centre, then rises towards the shoulders and stays lifted there, as though the edge of the fabric had been drawn upward. The runways have called it the cat-eye line. In the salon it is enough to say that it is a neckline that lifts the eye.
What the curve does for the figure
A straight neckline cuts the body horizontally, and the eye stops there. A curved one travels out towards the collarbone and the outer edge of the shoulder, so the upper body reads broader and calmer, and the neck reads longer. For a bride with narrow shoulders it restores balance with the hips; for a fuller bust it gives support, because the weight of the fabric is carried at the sides rather than in the centre.
The difference from a sweetheart neckline is one of direction: one closes towards the middle, the other opens towards the shoulders. The same bride in two gowns of identical cut will look different because of it, even if at first she cannot say why.
The construction that holds the curve
An edge like this is not made by decoration but by building. Beneath it sits a firm corseted bodice with boning that follows the curve, and the fabric needs body of its own: mikado, dense satin, a guipure lace that stands unaided. Soft tulle and fine silk give way here, and the line collapses after the first dance.
This is therefore a cut that asks for a fitting. The height of the curve is measured on your body, never on the hanger: a few centimetres decide whether the edge sits just above the collarbone or cuts into the shoulder. Sizes 34 to 44 and unhurried alterations leave room to move in either direction.
Details that do not compete with it
- Jewellery: a bare throat, or the finest chain; a necklace echoing the same curve doubles the line and blunts it.
- Hair: up or swept back, since loose curls cover precisely what the cut reveals.
- Veil: soft tulle without a heavy border at shoulder height, falling behind the line rather than across it.
- Sleeves: detachable, sheer and narrow, if you want a covered ceremony and an open evening.
The curved neckline works just as well on a softer maternity gown: the bodice stays shaped and firm, while the skirt below it falls free. We try it quietly, at an appointment arranged in advance, and the gown may be rented or bought; the rental contract also holds for brides travelling across the border.
One last word in front of the mirror: look at yourself from a distance, and in profile. A curved line is read from several steps away, in photographs and from the first row of the church or the hall, which is exactly why it has returned this season.
